I believe every teacher and student uses technology in the classroom in different ways and for different reasons.
In observing classrooms I've seen good teachers utilize technology in the spaces where they were switching assignments and not so great teachers use is as their main form of teaching-- being very hands off.
Students today have no choice but to adapt with technology and it has many open opportunities to be used as a learning source.

ISTE Standards:
The ISTE standards seem to build a guideline for teachers on how to incorporate technology effectively in their classrooms. I'd be willing to say that it would be an useful tool for teachers who are cautious about technology to use. The site claims that if teachers follow the "norms of appropriate, responsible tech. use" then it will build good digital citizenship. In other words, build students to not use technology for bad. Which, realistically is probably not fully preventable.
For student standards the site claims that they want students to be able to adapt to the rapid change in technology, but these students are growing up in technology so I feel there is a lack of need for the "help adjusting."
Digital Native:
This label for today's youth is fairly accurate. There really is hardly any escape from technology especially for the children in todays world. For me, growing up we had computer lab once a week maybe once every two weeks. But, today they have computer time daily in most classrooms even as young as kindergarten. I wouldn't say I identify as a digital native due to just how attached kids are to technology today. The amount of kids glued to an ipad, phone, or anything not physical toy related is atrocious. My personal concern is the affects this will have for their future and the question: is this an actual effective way to learn?
When I become a teacher I don't plan on incorporating technology anymore than what the school requires. It will be utilized of course but, I rather have a room with physical items to learn as I believe hands-on experience is one of the best ways to fully grasp a concept. Therefore, maybe my students will see me as an angry old lady who refuses technology even when I'll be the mere age of 22.

  1. Hey Lexi, I totally agree that technology has both good and bad uses in a classroom and that some teachers use it as a means to be hands-off with their students. Unfortunately, some teachers prefer that method as an easy way out of teaching because they are not truly passionate about it. It is also true that using technology for bad purposes is not fully inevitable, which explains cyberbullying and other similar online tragedies. Lastly, I too will not overuse technology in my classroom, however, who knows how much the curriculum will require technology by the time we are educators?
